Train Ticket Discount on Senior Citizen: Now Senior Citizens Will Get 50% Train Ticket Discount

A big announcement has come from the Indian Railways as regards the senior citizens. Long-abandoned Senior Citizen Rail Fare Discount Scheme is being resurrected once again. Under this new scheme, senior citizens will enjoy a maximum 50% discount on train tickets. This has been done to make travelling much more affordable for the elderly. In fact, it will not only lessen expenses on their journey but also provide them the added lookup of travelling more to visit family and friends. Railway Ministry feels that by sharing more outside their homes with the active community and in every sense, this initiative will uplift the living standards of senior citizens.

Discount Details and:

Under this ruling, it is expected that senior male citizens will get a discounted price for their tickets by 40% yet with senior female citizens it would be a benefit of up to 50% off of the ticket price. This discount will apply for all classes of ticket including sleeper, AC and general.

Required Eligibility Criteria:

Minimum Age for Male: 60 Years

Minimum Age for Female: 58 Years

Will need Verifiable Age Documentation like Aadhaar Card, PAN Card, or Passport.

Procedures for Application for Senior Citizen Train Ticket Discount

Below is how Senior Citizens can access the discount;

Online Booking: Via the official website of IRCTC or mobile app to book

Railway Ticket Counter: Book ticket directly through visiting the station.

Railway Ticket Agent: Can book ticket through authorized agents

Senior citizens will be required to submit their age proof at the time of application. For online booking, this data is updated in their profile while for the other booking channel, the age proof needs to accompany the booking process.

The Ministry of Railways is taking many actions for smooth implementation of the scheme:

Training Programmes: Provide Specialized training to Railway employees in helping the senior citizens.

Digital platform: a state-of-the-art online booking and messaging system for grievance redress.

Awareness Campaign: Publicizing the scheme across masses Awareness Campaigns.

Feedback Mechanism: Improvements in scheme through periodical surveys and feedback.

Regular Reviews: Quarterly review of effectiveness of the scheme.
